My wife uses Firefox and Gmail on a Windows 10 machine.

Approximately twice a week Gmail will stop updating and won't load, until she's cleared cache & cookies. It works in a private window, and it works in Chrome.

She's tried turning off all extensions, didn't help.

Any ideas of how to fix it?

See if this helps:

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.
The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn off Always Use Private Browsing Mode
Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History
At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes.
At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY
Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

It is quite unusual that this happens so often.

Are you using external cleanup software that might corrupt data in the profile folder ?

Did she try to bypass the disk cache in case it is only the cache and not cookies ?

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

The main difference is that Private Browsing mode isn't using the disk cache and uses a separate in memory cookie jar shared by all PB mode windows (tabs).

Are there messages in the Web Console about files that fail to load when this happens ?
