After updating to 55, 55.0.1 and 55.0.2 with both Windows 7 (64) and Windows 10 (64), the favicons do not stay. I know they do not sync (wish they would sync), but even after I visit the site the favicons show. If I shutdown FF and reopen, favicons are gone again. One or two may still be present though. I have tried both FF 32-bit and 64-bit, same result on both of my Windows machines.

Any thoughts as to why this would happen?

I only have 2 add-ons installed: AdGuard AdBlocker & DuckDuckGo Plus

Please do not use CCleaner for cleaning Firefox! We have had many reports over the years about CCleaner breaking various things in Firefox.

As far as Favicons goes - Firefox 55.0 got a new storage system for Favicon data, so I wonder of CCleaner was modified to reflect that change?

Moved from the places.sqlite file into its own favcions.sqlite file, along with adding two temporary storage files favcions.sqlite-wal and favcions.sqlite-shm which are used while Firefox is running. Then as Firefox is closed the temporary data is written to the main favcions.sqlite file.

The goals for the new storage system include saving the new Favicon with the newly saved bookmark (vs being saved upon the first use of the new bookmark) and the ability for Favicons to be Sync'd (although I'm not sure if the Sync service has been updated just yet). Not sure if there was a goal for the Bookmarks Backup scheme to handle Favicon data outside of the JSON file which can't handle the Favicon data itself.

I have been dealing with the favicon thing for awhile and finally decided to post a question about it. After restoring my Windows 7 laptop to a recovery image and installing FF55.0.2 (64) first I clicked on all links in the Bookmarks Bar, The favicons came back as they should have. I restarted the laptop and fired up FF and favicons were still there. I then ran CCleaner and opened FF. All favicons were now gone except Outlook.com's favicons.

1) This is a CCleaner issue that hasn't happened with prior releases, I have no idea which version of CCleaner started this issue.

OR

2) FF changed the way/location of favicons and now CCleaner removes them.

Thoughts?

Thank you for the detailed and very informative response. I have excluded the directory which holds the files you mentioned within CCleaner, I just ran CCleaner a few times and favicons remain within FF, Thank you very much!

Try turning ON remember history in Firefox settings. It worked for me, but i should also add that i did refresh firefox first which didn't initially help, but i'm unsure if that step was needed or not.

I do have "remember history" on, that apparently didn't matter. I just stopped using CCleaner and started using the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup.
