My browser.newtab.url is set to a conduit.com search engine and uneditable, even after uninstalled and reinstalled, import nothing checked. Help.

I can find no add on, tool bar, or extension for this. I did a search on my hard drive and it returned nothing as well.
about:support shows it listed under Important Modified preferences.

and find a good add / pop-up blocker.

You can check in "Windows Control Panel > Programs" for recently installed programs to see if anything from Conduit or any other suspicious software shows up.
You can open the about:config page via the location bar and search for prefs that refer to that site and reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

Ran the malwarebytes free version. After deleting all the garbage it found, everything went back to normal. I plan to run a few of the others suggested just for over kill on the problem. I also need to see why my own protection software (Symantec) didn't catch any of it.

as i m thinking that you already uninstalled your toolbar.....but your homepage is set on your toolbar homepage go to : Tools > options > and click on the Tab "General" and set your homepage to default...
Additional: If you are having issues with this after uninstalling it and running Malwarebytes (I did) including not being able to remove the search and receiving multiple warnings about unsafe sites, the best thing you can do is to restore to a previous backup point. This is a noxiously invasive program. IE continued to resolve to conduit as home page even after a different homepage was set, and Firefox rejected multiple sites include edx.org as untrusted, then blocked their CSS, rendering them unusable. None of the above actions (plus hand removal from the registry) was able to stamp the program out. It also reinstalled it on restart. Fortunately the last restore point was only a few days earlier, and nothing had been changed.
