New machine, set up Firefox - only I'm now unable to have the tabs where I want.

What is the matter with you people? The simple option of having tabs BELOW the navigation toolbar is taken away. We’re told of the ‘benefits’ of having tabs on top. But like crass Windows developers, those at Mozilla take one step forward then two steps back, and don't give the user a choice. The whole point of using Firefox is the ability to customise – I suggest you don’t lose sight of this fact!

I’ve read this piece: http://www.ghacks.net/2012/07/26/mozilla-tabs-on-bottom-feature-needs-to-go/

Maintenance costs? Pfff!

Solution choisie

It is still totally possible to set your tabs on top, just because the option is gone from the user interface doesn't mean you can.

Update to Firefox 18.0.2 Update Firefox to the latest release

Then, type about:config into your address bar, press enter, and accept the warning. Search for browser.tabs.onTop, and set it to false. Restart Firefox if necessary

the article you've linked to explains how to disable tabs on bottom so it isn't correct that users don't have a choice. and even if this feature would be removed from the core of firefox i'm fairly certain that there would be an extension available the next day that could revert this behaviour...

btw, please update your plugins (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited on the web).

I realise that it’s possible to have the tabs back at the bottom by messing about with config… etc. But the point is why remove the simplicity of unchecking the ‘tabs on top’ box?

And yes, maybe in the future we'll have to rely on a wonderful extension to change something as simple as tab position.

There’s extreme irritation in what is no more than navel-gazing. Why? Because it messes up our smooth-running, habit-forming cyber-experience, and we shouldn’t have to concern ourselves with this nonsense.

This fix doesn't seem to work with Firefox 20. I want my tabs back on top. What do I do?

Should still be working in Firefox 20 and later.

Current Firefox versions only show the "Tabs on Top" menu entry in the "View > Toolbars" and "Firefox > Options" menu and in toolbar context menus if the tabs aren't in the default position on top.

If the tabs are on top and the menu entry isn't available and you want to move the tabs below the navigation toolbar then you need to toggle the browser.tabs.onTop pref to false on the about:config page.
A Firefox restart is necessary to update the menu entry to either show or remove it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Why would you do that? If anyone goes to the trouble of specifically editing about:config it is obvious they dont want tabs on top ever. No program uses tabs on top: Word processing, spreadsheets, Adobe CS, PDF viewers, Notepad++ (so its not just commercial companies) etc.. Tabs are next to the active field by default in every program... except Chrome. Seems the Google takeover of Mozilla is almost complete with built in spyware to "help the user"and "maintain security", more and more settings that are set automatically and cannot be changed by the user.

If people wanted Chrome. they'd use Chrome. So if there is any shred of independant thought left at the Mozilla foundation please ungooglify yourselves asap and give users a real choice.

Type about:config in the address bar and if you see a warning message click "I'll be carefull, I promise!" and search for browser.tabs.onTop and set it to false. Your tabs will be on the bottom.
