I keep as many as 18 active windows open at one time, minimized in a row, top to bottom on one of my monitors so the pages are always fresh and available to me by maximizing or re-sizing the window. I use several of these at the same time during the day so tabs simply don't work for me. The latest update of Firefox, 17.0.1 will literally not minimize less than the size of 2.25 of the earlier windows, so less than 1/2 the open windows now fit on my screen. I changed FROM IE to Firefox about 3 years ago for this very reason, and now I've had to change again to Opera, which I honestly dislike. Is there a way around this or will it be fixed in later releases?

You may have installed an extension (or theme) that is preventing this.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I followed all of your instructions, and still the window will not shrink as small as it used to. I uninstalled the new version and re-installed version 16.x and everything worked properly. A few days later, an automatic update once again installed version 17x and I'm right back where I started, I can't use Firefox again. If you look at the image below, on the left, I have several Firefox windows open at one time on my desktop. Usually, they fill the entire right side of my monitor, top to bottom. The image on the right shows how version 17x will not shrink anywhere near as small (top to bottom) so I cannot fit all the windows I need to keep open on my monitor, and Firefox has been rendered useless for me. Can this be fixed?

In case it is caused by the Navigation Toolbar then try to hide that toolbar to see if that helps.
You can also try small icons to see if that makes nay difference.

I uninstalled the older version I've been using and re-installed version 17x. I tried each of these suggestions, but again, the firefox window won't shrink as small as the top line of text as in the images I sent. Remember, I didn't change any settings. I uninstalled 17x and re-installed the older version (not 16, as I previously stated, but 13x I think), and the old version shrinks perfectly. If I allow an update to version 17 (without changing a thing), I open firefox and it will only shrink as far as the right hand image I sent previously.

The only way to make this work is with only one tab open and hiding the tab bar and the Navigation Toolbar.
If either of these bars are showing then Firefox adjust the height to display them.

This has never been the case in the past. The tab bar means nothing to me, I don't use tabbed browsing, but the navigation toolbar is the address bar, right? With it hidden by default, every time I open firefox, I won't be able to type a URL directly. Is this what you are suggesting?

You can drag the items that you need from the Navigation Toolbar to the menu bar in customize mode.

Thank you. I will try this tomorrow.

Alright, I tried this tonight. I removed ALL toolbars and it still will not shrink. Try it yourself. Look closely at my images, see what I am talking about, and try to duplicate it. It simply doesn't work. Now, can you find out what code has changed in this update that prevents this function and inquire about a fix, or am I simply resigned, once again, to move to another browser?

I'm not on Windows, so I don't know if it behaves there differently.

On Linux I can make the height shirk to only show the menu bar if all other toolbars are hidden as shown in the screenshot.

How does this configuration look in your case?

Slightly smaller than in the image I previously sent, but only slightly. Still twice as large in height as previously. Simply can't use it that way.

By the way, my personal laptop now has 17 as well, same problem. Here, however it isn't an issue as I don't need to shrink the window so small

I had small toolbar icons in my screenshot. On Windows the Back button is rather large when large toolbar buttons are selected.

Did you try to select small <strike>buttons</strike> icons?

Do you mean "small icons"? if so, yes. Didn't help and I can't see the rest of my icons that way anyway. Did you see the size I can shrink the early version to on my left hand image? You need ot scroll all the way to the right side. All that is visible is the "blue bar" with the min/max and "X" and below, _File _Edit _View _History, etc.... I can actually shrink smaller than that in the early version. Something has changed and for users like me, it makes Firefox unusable.

My issue is far from solved at this time. Where can I go next to try to resolve this problem and make Firefox usable once again?
