How to hide ónly the title bar, withóut hiding the menu bar, in 3.6.13?

more options

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I have googled the question, but could not find an answer.

I was wondering if it is possible to hide the title bar in 3.6.13, perhaps with the help of an addon, withóut hiding the menu bar.

Maybe it's possible in the new version, but I do not want to upgrade (yet) to 4 because some addons i use are not (yet) supported.

I've played around a bit with the 'Hide caption titlebar plus' addon, but could not find a setting where i could do the former without the latter.

The menu bar is the only bar on the top side of my screen I want to use. I have dragged all the stuff from the other default bars (navigation, toolbar) to it. And i want it to be visible at all times, so not hidden behind another menu or button.

Can my wishes be fulfilled? ;-)

Thanks very much.

You can set the pref extensions.autohide.zombieMode to true and press F11 to enter zombie Full Screen mode. If you close Firefox while in (zombie) full screen mode then the next start will be in the same mode. That is done via the pref extensions.autohide.openZombie, so no need to change that pref yourself.

Autohide is an extension that provides an advanced version of Full Screen. It has an Option for "Always show" for any of the Toolbars, so you can set it up to always show the Menu bar when you are in Full Screen mode.

There may be other extensions that do what you want, see this AMO Search.

You can use the Autohide extension in zombie mode to remove the chrome if you do not want to use full screen mode.

Brilliant!

Thanks the-edmeister and cor-el, for your quick and very useful replies!

The autohide program is great. It lets me adjust many things, and in full- screen mode it lets me see the screen exactly as i wished. I did not fully understand the zombie mode part, so i travelled on the web a bit with the help of some of the new search terms you guys provided me with, and along the way found a handy addon called: “Hide Caption”.

Although it has not (yet) been reviewed by Mozilla – also the reason why i had not find it earlier via their addon website - it had very good reviews by the users, so I downloaded it [and scanned it afterwards, did not find any malware]. Works perfectly, also in normal screen modus. And in combination with autohide I can now find my ideal settings for what is displayed on the screen when I enter into full-screen modus.

But now i’m still curious about the zombie mode. I’m totally new to about:config, and tried something, but could not figure it out completely. Could one of you perhaps help me with it?

What i found on a forum on the web was:

Set "Zombie Mode" as default:

  • user_pref("extensions.autohide.zombieMode", true)
  • default is false

Border for "Zombie Mode":

  • user_pref("extensions.autohide.zombieBorder", true)
  • default is false

Titlebar for "Zombie Mode":

  • user_pref("extensions.autohide.zombieBorderAndTitle", true)
  • default is false

But when i looked into the about:config screen, and searched for ‘zombie’,

i found only two strings, with different names than the ones above, namely:

extensions.autohide.openZombie user set boolean false

extensions.autohide.zombieBorder default integer 2

Do i have to create new strings (and if so, how)? The wording of the forum instructions “the default is this, the value must be that etc.) seemed to implie that the strings should already be there.

Or can i somehow achieve my goal by adjusting the value of my 2 strings in a certain way? {To experiment I changed the value of the first string to true and the value of the second string to 0 [hoping the number value was something like the border width or so ;-)], but nothing happened.}

Thanks for all the help so far!

If you use zombie mode then you can use Autohide with a not maximized screen (not in full screen mode) without a title bar.
If you want to use full screen mode then you do not need to look at the zombie mode prefs.
You should see those prefs (extensions.autohide.zombieMode) on the about:config page.

Thx cor-el.

Yes, i would like to have the title bar removed, also in non fullscreen mode. And I would like to know how to do that with autohide in zombie mode. That way I can always lateron decide what to use (autohide in zombie modus or the hide caption addon, or maybe a combination of both) and in the mean time I learn something about ‘about:config’.

But now the problem, and I’m sorry to ask this question again:

Do I have to set new user preferences, or can I achieve my goals by only adjusting my extisting user preferences?

When I type: ‘zombie’ in the search bar of the ‘about:config’ screen, I find only two user preferences, namely:

extensions.autohide.openZombie user set boolean false extensions.autohide.zombieBorder default integer 2

These are not precisely the same as the one you mentioned in your reply “extensions.autohide.zombieMode”,

and two of the user prefs in the forum post I referred to are different, and one is the same but has a different type and value: user_pref("extensions.autohide.zombieMode", true) user_pref("extensions.autohide.zombieBorder", true) user_pref("extensions.autohide.zombieBorderAndTitle", true)

As experiment I tried adding the new user prefs (as described in the link to the MozillaZine Knowledge Base you gave me). I managed to add the first (zombieMode) and the third (zombieBorderAndTitle) user prefs with the right values (boolean, true). But could not change the type of the second one (zombieBorder) from integer to boolean. Is that possible to change the type of an existing preference?

But, ... I don’t even know if the above is the right way to go.

But if you could tell me wheter I should only modify existing prefs, or add new one like I tried to do, that would already help alot.

Thanks in advance for your patience …  ;-)

If the prefs mentioned on the Autohide help page do not exist then you need to create them yourself.
Make sure that you create a new pref with the correct type (Boolean for true/false type prefs). You can't change the type of a pref. If you made a mistake then you need to reset the pref and close and restart Firefox and create a new pref with the correct type. The pref zombieBorder should be an Integer pref and not a Boolean and that pref specifies the window border width while in zombie mode. You need to create a new Boolean pref extensions.autohide.zombieMode

Hi cor-el

I added the new prefs in about config. I’ve made two screenhots of it, one before restart and one after. I uploaded the screenshots, I assume they will be displayed beneath the message. The value of extensions.autohide.openZombie changes back from true to false after restart, the rest of the user prefs stay the same.

I see no change in the appearance of firefox.

I also tried:

Setting extensions.autohide.zombieBorder back to 2 Resetting extensions.autohide.zombieBorderAndTitle

And each time after that a restart. But nothing seems to be happening.

Did i still do something wrong?

Or could it perhaps be that one or more my other addons interfere with it? (i have many addons but none active that have to do with for example the titlebar (hide caption) or full screen modes etc)

If i did something wrong, please correct me.

If i did it right but there is a likely cause of why it doesn't work, i'll try to change that as a last resort.

If i did it right and there is some unknown reason why it doesn't work in my case, I think i give up.

In that case at least i've had some practice with about:config  ;-)

Thanks.
