OS: Debian 11 Firefox version: 108.0.1 64-bit

All updates must be approved manually by me. It was long time since I last updated my addons, so I don't know for how long this hypothetical hidden addon was on my browser. To be sure, I removed literally all addons that I have installed, yet in its GUI Firefox still displays that there update available. Firefox itself is already updated to the latest version, I checked it.

I write these words from different computer, using brand-new Firefox profile. I also haven't noticed any strange behaviors on my original computer.

Sometimes I see a higher number than expected. I suspect this is due to an extension having multiple updates since my last update. Is there a way to determine exactly what is going on? Nothing is leaping out me.

To check a different view of your installed extensions, use the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Scroll down to the "Add-ons" table. Normally a new install will have a bunch of Firefox search engine extensions (ID ends with "@search.mozilla.org") and "addons-search-detection@mozilla.com".

Do you see any mysteries on this list?

>Do you see any mysteries on this list?

No, I don't.

>I suspect this is due to an extension having multiple updates since my last update.

As I already said, I removed all extensions I installed. IMHO, if there was an update to any of them, it would have disappeared.

Try clearing the startup cache in case this information somehow ends up in there. On the Troubleshooting Information page, there is a button for it in the upper right under the heading Try clearing the startup cache -- note: this does restart Firefox.

In your Firefox profile folder, there is a file named extensions.json that you also could compare with the other lists. You can simply drop this file into a tab to get a structured view, or you can use my extractor tools to make it a bit more readable:

Have you clicked on the button to see what the update is? Could it be a language pack?

I checked extensions.json, but didn't find find anything suspicious

>Have you clicked on the button to see what the update is?

The screenshot that I attached already shows results of clicking on "available updates". As you can see, there is nothing.

After I restarted the browser this notification about available update disappeared. I think I will treat it as a GUI glitch. Although I nuked my profile, removed ~/.mozilla and reinstalled the browser, just in case.
