I am running Firefox 70.0.1 (64 bit) on Win10. I assume most of my problem started after being updated to this Firefox version.

I have hundreds, if not thousands of bookmarks and have been running Firefox since its inception. I constantly import my bookmarks when I go from one machine to a new one over the years.

Because of the volume of bookmarks I have, I keep my most regularly used bookmarks at the top so when this happened, I noticed immediately since I could not find my most active ones.

I went to Firefox "Show all bookmarks" and did a restore from a few days prior and it seemed to be OK.

I shut down last night and when I restarted this morning. They were again shuffled, seemingly somewhat randomly.

Some time ago I noticed that my very long list had duplicated itself as if taking the whole list and appending it to the bottom of the list in the same order but since everything was there and in order I figured I would fix that some time in the future and never got around to it. Now I'm noticing that my bookmark folders have duplicated lists of their folders and sub-folders duplicated within the folder.

Is there a limit that I reached which is causing corruption and duplication or is it something else.

I am very hesitant to take some steps for fear of losing the whole bookmarks database but I have to do something.

Any safe ideas? Anyone having any similar issues?

I couldn't wait so I deleted all my bookmarks and "Imported" a recent "Export" html list and other than losing the few weeks of new bookmarks since the time I did that export it seems to be working again.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will mark this issue as resolved although the real problem was not found before I reloaded from an old version.

Are you using Sync? And if so, is a "mobile" device connected to that Sync account? i.e., Firefox for iOS or Firefox for Android being "mobile" devices

If you are using Sync, disconnect all devices from your Sync account / Firefox Account until someone here can guide you thru fixing that corruption.

Thank you "the-edmeister" but I am not using Sync. In case it got installed automagically by some update, install or other software change, where would I find "Sync"?

Actually, if I was using it, I wouldn't know. I never set up any continuity between my smartphone and my desktop.

If you lost personal data then it is possible that a new default-release profile folder has been created. See "Determine if Firefox has created a new profile":

You can open the about:profiles page via the location bar to check whether multiple profiles are present and what profile Firefox currently is using.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

In case errors are reported with "Verify Integrity" close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
