After re-install, TB downloads all 90.000 emails from my account in Gmail. How to prevent this?

My Thunderbird (which I really am fond of) got cramped so I deleted it and wanted to start all new and fresh. I use 4 Gmail accounts. After deleting all of TB from my pc (W10), I installed TB new. Then I started adding my Gmail accounts. The first thing TB did was downloading all 90.000 emails from my Gmail account. You can imagine the mess. Please advise on what to do to only download the emails from the last week or so. Many thanks!!
