How can I prevent Firefox from updating
The release of Firefox V57 has the potential of disabling a number of extensions on which I rely. How can I prevent automatic updating (essentially "freeze" my version) until I have found adequate replacements for the extensions about to be made obsolete?
An ancillary question might be: how can I archive a version of Firefox so that I can roll back to it?
I understand the potential security risks.

First, this is a problem to worry about in six months. Second, I suggest contacting authors of crucial extensions to see whether they plan to rewrite them -- not all can be rewritten. Third, you do not need to archive Firefox installers, but if you want to, there is a link to a huge collection of them in this article: Install an older version of Firefox.

Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar.
Under Advanced, Select Update. Check the settings.

Six months is not a long time. For example, the author of Tab Groups has already posted that he will not be converting his code and it takes time to wade through available extensions and try out possible alternatives. Personally archiving older versions is a pain and may not be necessary unless Mozilla removes access to their archive.
