Unable to transfer Thunderbird from Windows 10 laptop

I am unable to transfer Thunderbird from my Windows 10 laptop to new Windows 10 laptop. Having initially successfully use the 38.1.0 setup s/w I got into a mess trying to transfer my original profile, so I erased everything and tried again with a clean setup . Then, on running thunderbird.exe, I got a message that no profile could be loaded. I then uninstalled and erased everything and re-installed using the current version of setup newly downloaded from Mozilla only to get exactly the same message. I don't know what I am doing wrong or how to correct it and would be very grateful for help.
