I get unrequested websites while using firefox
while signed in at some web site, I get another website unrequested that appears over the top of the working website. I can't find a way to prevent it. The pop-ups appear to be random--not a previously accessed website.

You can look for suspicious extensions like TopArcadeHits and remove/disable them.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
