Somewhere around TB 93.3.1 (probably earlier), TB switched from menus that allow you to hover to select submenus to menus that require that you click. The latter allows much quicker navigation. The former required an additional click for each submenu you descend into. For example, <click> on main menu button, <click> on View, <click> on Sort By, <click> on Received. That's 3 clicks. Then realize you mean to sort by Date and that's another 3 clicks. I'd rather hover... What benefit is derived with having to click as opposed to just hover?

Two things, click on the date heading in the list. One click to sort by that entry. a second to reverse the sort on that item.

The second is Thunderbird menu system has migrated to a HTML based design. You are far from the first person to be frustrated by it, but none of the bug reports we have files shook the resolve of the developers that this is how it is going to be.

No three things. Turn on the menu bar at the top of the window ( right click the toolbar) the top menu bar still uses the traditional on hover style menu options. My choice of menu for Thunderbird. I have little use for the application menu on the toolbar other than to locate things to offer as steps in this forum because windows users do not see the menu bar by default.

Users do not care that the menu system has moved to HTML. Users care about how easy or hard it is to use a product. This change does nothing but makes things harder. There is no justifiable reason to require additional clicks. Instead of shacking the resolve of developers, the developers should be asked to justify the change. The justification of "Well it's HTML based now" is wholely inadequate.

Take, for example, this very own forum in which you can hover over your profile picture and a menu pops up requiring no additional clicks...

I am not trying to justify anything. Personally I really don't care anymore as I don't use it at all and I would assume I am not alone in my boycott. I use the menu bar, as do MAC and Linux users because they have it visible by default as well, long term profile users probably have it enabled as it used to defaulted in Windows as well. I see no use for this apparent "space" saving" Appmenu, other than to conform to the design principles for Android apps with touch, or a web app that should be on a web site somewhere.

I said you are far from the first to express frustration, I am one of them. Some of us have been participating in bugs about it for 2 years trying to have things changed without a result. You are lecturing the converted here about the deficiencies of the interface.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1546309 is the implementation bug.

I will not say never, but one individual on a specific topic that have been dragged into perhaps twice a year would about do it. Developers do not do user support. THey can be found on Bugzilla or on the various topic box lists like the user experience list. https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/groups/ux .
