Disappearing X

All of a sudden, the closing X has disappeared. I can close Firefox by going down to the bottom of the screen and clicking on the X in the firefox icon. But that shuts down Firefox entirely. When I try to open Firefox, I don't get the main page but rather the page Iwas on and there is no way to get off. (PS--I am 74 and obviously not to compute literate)

Make sure you run Firefox in desktop mode and not in tablet mode.
