Both of the last two versions have had patches for the MAPI issue.
Hello guys, I have same problem. Windows 7 + XLS,DOC,PDF can´t attach. Only txt,lnk and other text files.
Before the recent MAPI issues with TB, Win 7 users were advised to install a MS Visual Studio package: Known Issues.

There is still an issue if the file name contains non-ASCII characters:
Renamed XLS to test.xls without effect, so UTF8 bug its not and trick with Visual Studio didnt helped either :( Any other tricks in a hat?
Do you have all the boxes checked in the picture in this post? There is also a registry file that you should check.
I tried to rename file just to test.xls, test.doc, test.pdf without success and yes Thunderbird is default app for everyting.
