I simply need for Thunderbird to require my password in order for it to be opened. It now opens automatically with no password requirement.

Try the Startup Master add-on.

It shows a welcome dialogue box where you have to enter your Master Password before anything else happens.

I'd suggest you consider the Startup Master approach to be "privacy" rather than "security". A savvy user could start Thunderbird in Safe Mode and thereby disable and circumvent this or any other add-on. But there again they could just copy your profile.

If you're concerned about security rather than privacy, I think you need to look at measures for securing your computer. More ideas here:
