After installing Firefox 44.0 update, if I click on a link in an email, Firefox launches successfully but the website listed in the URL does not open. I get a blank new tab instead. However, if have Firefox up and running, and then click on the link in an email, Firefox will open the website in a new tab. Installed Firefox 44.0.1 - It did not fix the problem.

I am running Windows 7.

Just installed 44.0.2 which appears to have fixed the problem.  :)

Spoke too soon - Links to secure website [HTTPS] still don't launch. :(

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

When I boot my computer in Windows Safe Mode with Network Support, I am unable to run Windows Live Mail 2012 or Windows Office products that have emails or documents which have links in them. The Windows Office products do not run because something is trying to check for a valid software license and can not complete the verification. The Windows Live Mail application will not launch because of something it does not like about the configuration when running in Safe Mode.

However, I have verified when running in Windows Normal Mode that if IE is my default browser instead of Firefox that IE will successfully launch both normal and secure links [HTTP and HTTPS}.
