How to I make sure all my iMap emails are downloaded to my PC even if I never read them?

I use Thunderbird via iMap on both my Mac and PC. I want a hard copy of all of my email download to both computers as a backup. I assume this does not happen automatically. I figure maybe if I do a search that hits the "body" of all email that this might happen but might not get attachments. Before iMap when using POP this happened automatically. Help. Thanks, Alan

Tools menu (Alt+T) > account settings > synchronization and storage is the place to look to check up, but the default is everything.
