bookmarks do not go into proper folders, only show up in 'recently bookmarked'

this didn't used to happen, but now, --when i bookmark a site to go to a certain folder, it does not appear there. it does appear in the 'recently bookmarked' folder. also: --i cannot add a 'new bookmark' i am sure i did something inadvertintently, but don't know how to undo it. thanks
