Thunderbird opens and dispalys a normal inbox, sent mail, etc and then something opens ontop that obscures the normal TB interface that I can't close.

When I open TB, the normal interface appears for just a second and then a new tabbed interface opens with a single tab. How do I close this tabbed (empty) interface or better yet, prevent it from opening. I reinstalled TB, that didn't solve the problem.

This is actually my 89 yo mother's pc who is lost without email access. I really need help.
