Firefox loses the bookmarks and passwords randomly

Periodically Firefox will lose the bookmarks. It used to be that if I saved the profile that I could reload the program and then copy the profile I'd saved into the new one created when I reloaded the program. But that doesn't seem to work any more for either Firefox or Thunderbird.
