I know this problem was previously answered in 2012, but I do not use cccleaner, so there must be another source to the problem. It has only appeared in the last wek or so. TB is not currently running and session.json file is still available in my mail folder. I have restarted TB in this Windows 7 session and the file's current contents are:

{"rev":0,"windows":[{"type":"3pane","tabs":{"rev":0,"selectedIndex":0,"tabs":[{"mode":"folder","state":{"folderURI":"mailbox://eric_in_spain%40ymail.com@pop.mail.yahoo.com/Inbox","folderPaneVisible":true,"messagePaneVisible":false,"firstTab":true},"ext":{"quickFilter":{"filterValues":{"text":{"text":null,"states":{"sender":true,"recipients":true,"subject":true}}},"visible":true}}}]}}]}

Any suggestions, anybody?

If the message pane setting is not being retained between restarts, there is something wrong in your profile folder, and if it's not possible to find the source of the problem, it's usually easier and faster to set up a new profile.

But perhaps what might be useful here is to set up filters that e.g. move the unsolicited mail out of the Inbox to a separate folder, or highlight (tag) the important mail in the Inbox.

I'm running version 24.4.0.

I always have the Mesage Pane open because it is the quickest method of reading emails which I select to open with a single click. It means no tabs to open and close; less clicking means less likelihood of RSD.

So, I tested, View > Layout and deselect Message Pane. Closed and then reopened Thunderbird and the Message Pane was not open.

Please confirm that you are using version 24.4.0 Please confirm that it also occurs if you restart in Safe Mode - so disable the Message Pane, then Help > select 'Restart with addons disabled'.

Thanks for your help with this. I am using 2.4.0 and the problem is still there whether or not I am in safe mode. I have inadvertently found a solution that works for me. I simply drag the top edge of the message pane down to the bottom of the screen, so that while session.json still has the value set to "true", the pane does not appear on the screen.

Is there any reason why you do not want to see / use the Message Pane?

I receive many unsolicited emails and prefer to see an uncluttered inbox so that I can maximise the number of unwanted emails that I delete.

I realise that the preference for or against the message pane is a personal thing, and I respect your decision, but it is not the way I prefer to work.
