having problem with Y! hijacking New Tab. Trying to prevent this activity. Suggested solution was to Refresh Firefox. The list of items affected by the Refresh does not include Shopping Cart items on ecommerce sites. Are they deleted or not?

It depends how they are stored. If you are logged in, it's likely tied to your account. If you aren't, it's likely based on cookies on your computer, so yes it would be reset.
