I suddenly can't access my school e-mail. The help desk advised me to update Firefox. Wouldn't work. Suggestions?

I'm an older ECU student with a MacBook OS 10.7.5, with Firefox 48.0.2. I can't update my Firefox to be able to access my school e-mail. Is there another version of Firefox that will work with my older MacBook that will still access the Microsoft Outlook e-mail that ECU uses? Any suggestions?

Firefox 45 ESR works for me with the MS Outlook.com website, so should work as well with the Firefox 48 version that is the last Firefox that your OS supports.

Did you try the usual troubleshooting steps?

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Firefox -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Firefox -> Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure that your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

There is security software that can interfere with loading content, so check that as well.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
