Favicons do not display

This article is no longer maintained, so its content might be out of date.

Favicons are the icons that represent a certain site. If a site does not have a favicon, it will show a standard website icon. They appear in the Location bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, Library window, and Bookmarks Menu. This article will outline possible solutions for favicons not displaying.

Not showing after import

After importing, a bookmark needs to be used once for the favicon to be shown. Click on the bookmark and let the page load. After a few seconds, a favicon should appear.

Not displaying in the Bookmarks Toolbar

The default Firefox theme does not show favicons in the Bookmarks Toolbar. You must use a different theme that supports favicons. Themes can be found at http://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/themes. If you prefer to use the default theme, you try the Mac bookmark toolbar favicons script.

Make sure that the website has a favicon.

  1. Navigate to the website.

  3. Select the Media panel.
  4. Look for the favicon. The Type should be Icon.

The image "page" does not exist.

  2. Select the Privacy panel.
  3. Make sure Firefox will: is not set to Never remember history.

Remove then re-add the bookmark

As a last resort, you can delete the bookmark, then add it back. For instructions on adding and deleting bookmarks, read the Bookmarks in Firefox article.
