I upgraded from version 3.6 to 5.0 and now my computer is really slow to open web pages why is this???

I changed from Internet Explorer to Firefox3.6 and was pleased with the increased speed. I was prompted to upgrade to version 5.0 and the increased speed went away pages open slower than with IE. Is there something I need to do to optimize my speed?
