Previously there was a bookmark bar at the top of the page showing most used sites , doesn't appear to be available now

Just to clarify, are you sure you mean Firefox for Android?
A bookmark bar has been (and still is) a feature of Firefox on the desktop, but (as far as i am aware) is not a fetaure of Firefox for Android.
