I think the thing you have tried isn't the proper way to solve here problem. So you can do this:

  • At first, toggle browser.formfill.enable to true and browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enable to true. (Unless you can't open your menubar)
  • Now tap on menubar. Which is usually a hamburger like icon on the bottom of your device.
  • Select Settings > Customize > Home and uncheck Show site suggestion
  • Then go back to Customize and tap on Search. Uncheck Show search suggestion

I think this will help.

Yes it seems that this feature only turns off search suggestion. I have tried to turn off site suggestion but may be there is no option. Because about:config doesn't have all the urlbar option in Firefox for Android which is available for Firefox desktop browser.

hmm, maybe that's an idea for an update to come?

can we propose features anywhere? ;)

Yes, go to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and create your feature request under the proper category (which in this case is Firefox for Android).
