Firefox indicates that pages have insecure content. How can I find out which items are insecure?

I get insecure content warnings on several websites including Facebook and Youtube. 99% of the time I have the padlock but occasionally the page will become insecure. As far as I can tell this happens after the page has been open for a while. I suspect it is one of my addons but would rather not find the culprit with trial and error as it could take weeks given the frequency with which the issue occurs.

Is there a way to find out which HTTP request(s) were made such that the page became insecure after the page has loaded? I can't really use firebug or the network inspector as these need to be running when the page is first loaded (so all the time).

I am not using Firefox for any online purchases until this is resolved. I have tried a complete profile wipe and reinstalled my extensions. Any thoughts?

The easiest (!) way is to use Firefox's Browser Console. You can open the console using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+j
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Web Developer > Browser Console

Lots of noise here. To focus the display, in the upper right corner of the console you will see a search box. Type mix in the box and the mixed content warnings should become visible. I have attached an example.

You can keep the dialog minimized with this filter in place for quicker reference.

Note: Unfortunately, some add-ons send a lot of debugging information to the console which can eventually flush the information you want to find. I'm not sure whether there is a way to block that or to increase the amount that the console can hold. If this is a problem for you, hopefully someone can suggest a solution for that.

Note that these are usually images and thus also should appear in Tools > Page Info > Media

@cor-el All resources there were loaded over HTTPS.

It is possible that you have extensions that make such a request if it isn't caused by content on the pages.
