Why does focus change from web page to bookmarks page? It just does this arbitrarily without my touching a key. Very annoying to have to keep changing it back!

Let's say I open a link from the bookmarks page. The focus on my computer screen then changes, correctly, to the page I want to visit. But then, after a few seconds, it switches back to the bookmarks page. I have to then manually switch back to the web page I'm trying to read.

I don't have the answer to your question, but I have a suggestion.

While browsing in Firefox, pressing Ctrl + B will bring up a bookmark sidebar.
This is setup the same as the bookmarks library window and contain the same bookmarks.

When you click the bookmarks on this sidebar, it will open the bookmark and since everything is all in the same window, you will not need to switch back and forth between the bookmarks and window.

To exit the bookmark sidebar, press Ctrl + B agian.

This will not fix your issue that you posted above, but is a "quick fix".

Thank you, ComputerWhiz, that was a quick response! I am aware of the bookmarks sidebar but I prefer to have the bookmarks open as a separate window so that I have the full display with all the columns and tags, etc.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Oh, ack. I knew that one would be a suggestion :D I was actually hoping that someone else had had this problem already and had found a solution, or even might know which extension might be causing the trouble. The thing is, I don't know how feasible it is to try to single out an extension that might be the cause, as it doesn't happen every time I open a bookmark -- so it would require quite a lot of surfing around, in and out of safe mode, and then one extension at a time, to see which one triggers the problem. But I guess if I don't hear from anyone who's had this particular problem then that's what I'm going to have to do, if anything at all. It's a fairly minor annoyance that may not really be worth the time to try to pinpoint. I do appreciate the responses, and any other suggestions/fixes that may come up.

Yeah ive never seen such problems, you might want to exclude popular addons though or ones that have been installed before this problem.

I have never heard of this issue. I don't experience this issue.

I have looked at all of the Firefox configurations and can't figure it out.

I am sorry that my previous suggestion didn't help you.

NOTE: You are using an outdated version of Firefox. This can cause security issues and may not allow your browser to function correctly. Please update to the most recent version of Firefox.

Are you opening the Library window (Show All Bookmarks) or are you opening the bookmarks via the places.xul or bookmarksPanel.xul file in a new Firefox window?

  • chrome://browser/content/places/places.xul
  • chrome://browser/content/bookmarks/bookmarksPanel.xul

I'm using "Show all bookmarks."
