Why do large (>50MB) Javascript movies stop running properly at version 17 (and also later), making me downgrade to version 15?

My job includes examining a large volume of solar images in movies. For example, take a look at http://aia.lmsal.com/aia_cadence/aia_0304_orig_20120831_1915/AIA_0304_ORIG_20120831_1915_j.html, which is more than 120 MB. On my Mac (OS 10.6.8), this used to run smoothly on Firefox, but when I upgraded to version 17 earlier this year, it stopped running smoothly with frequent blank frames. I remember last summer I was on version 15 and the movies ran without problem. Therefore I downgraded to version 15, and have ignored prompts for upgrade up to now. Is this problem known and has it possibly been taken care of in the newest version? I was told by my colleague that version 18 was pretty much the same as version 17 (bad), and that Google Chrome could handle my movies properly.

I am busy right now and do not want my work to be interrupted. I will not upgrade until you guarantee that the problem is resolved in the latest version. You have obviously not done so.

Following your advice, I upgraded to 20.0 - with great regret. The problem I described, occasional blank frames, still persists. I will go back to 15.0. But I have to find out where the dmg file is. Oh wow.

On a second thought, it is possible that the problem may lie only in the Mac version of Firefox and that it may not be found on Windows or Linux. So I ask Mac users to run the following Javascript movie on Firefox 15.0 and Firefox 17.0 (or 20.0) [and even on Google Chrome and Safari], and to find if there is any difference.

Beware that the movie is 147 MB.
