I installed some software that took over FF. I have managed to get my home pages back, but when I click for a new tab the icons for previous pages briefly appear (1 or 2 seconds) but are then overridden by a page relating to the Software I installed.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

Thanks for that. I didn't follow it exactly, but it made me think of checking the extensions and I found the problem one there. I disable and removed it and now everything is back to the way it was.

This just shows how careful we need to be though. The software i installed gave no indication that it was changing settings of my browser!! I have also removed this software.
