Many sites I go to tell me WHERE I AM which is actually NOT where I am. Can this be changed in Firefox or are these sites looking at something else on my computer (Windows Vista)?

For example, when I go to yahoo.com it tells me what the local wx is in a city that I am not in. It is about 100 miles from me. And this is starting up Firefox with NO cookies on board. Not a great concern, but it is a slight nuisance.

Where does this website say you are located?

There's two ways of a website determining where you are located.

  1. IP Address - for "hard" connections - accuracy may be limited to where your specific connections is connected to the internet, but from what I have seen the accuracy has improved dramatically over the years as my ISP has upgraded their system in my area
  2. Geolocation - for "wireless" connections - accuracy depends upon the geolocation service being used by the website and the number of wi-fi hotspots in your area - drastically improved as the number of smart phones increased

Hi,

It could be because Yahoo may be using the IP address to determine the location. The IP address range of an ISP may span several hundred kilometers.

Many thanks. I had a suspicion this might be the case but wasn't sure. This is the first time I have had other than a dial up connection.
