Opening links in (eg Zoom) causing firefox to crash on startup

Any links that I try to open automatically (for example from Slack or from email) are causing Firefox to crash on startup. I have uploaded the crash report but wondered if I could get some support.

I am running Ubuntu and have made sure I am up to date on OS and also removed and reinstalled Firefox both did not change behaviour.

I can open firefox, type in the link into the URL and it works fine it seems.

Sorry to hear about the crashes.

Does it make any difference if Firefox is already running and then you click an external link to launch it in a new tab in the active Firefox window (or in a separate window if you don't divert new windows to new tabs instead)?

I don't know whether you have opened the about:crashes page to see what is in your crash reports. It sometimes is helpful to forum volunteers if you can share the last several crash report IDs (or the corresponding full URLs) so we can see whether we recognize any issues. But you may want to click through the links on the about:crashes page yourself first to make sure you are comfortable sharing.

Hi - thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, that does make a difference. If I have firefox already open I don't experience the crash behaviour.

Here is an example of one of the crashes. I haven't done it more than once this time around, but I could do if that was helpful:

https://crash-stats.mozilla.org/report/index/21789d8a-2757-4ece-a572-734c20210713

Also, I should say that I don't get any similar crashes or bad behaviour from Chrome which is my secondary browser, but I'd rather get Firefox working again of course.

You can try to disable WebRender to see whether this has effect.

You can disable WebRender by setting this pref to true on the the about:config page.

  • gfx.webrender.force-disabled = true

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Hi cor-el,

Thanks for the suggestion, I made that change and tested and still had the same error.
