I love Firefox and have used it for years!

I am working on a Macbook Air, with the latest Big Sur iOS.

Today Firefox was working fine.

Then (in an attempt to use a new software that requires an old version of Firefox) I uninstalled my current Firefox and installed an old version of Firefox. (Side note: the old version of Firefox would not work with the new software's imacros because of Big Sur. So I have installed Parallels so I can run the new software on Windows.)

Soooooooo, I uninstalled the old version of Firefox, and then downloaded the lastest version of Firefox. I installed it as instructed.

Two things are happening:

1. Firefox icons in Applications and in the dock both show as a shortcut. I cannot seem to install a non--shortcut version of Firefox! 2. EVERY time I now open Firefox, it requires me to re-login to Firefox AND reinstall the extensions. Very annoying!

So I know I'm missing something. Not real technie, so any help is appreciated!

Thank you!

Thank you for your reply, Cor-el! I did all of the proper steps.

What I just did this afternoon is go into my TimeMachine backup and restored Firefox from a few days ago. And now it seems to be working fine!

Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

Actually, iOS is what runs on iPhones and iPads. I'll flag this thread to move to "desktop" Firefox instead.

Here's my understanding:

If you run Firefox from the DMG installer file, it will always use a transient profile that is gone once you quit out.

You need to run Firefox from the Applications folder after the maneuver described in this article: How to download and install Firefox on Mac.

Thank you! That just goes to show you that I’m not as techy as I could be. It’s the Big Sur operating system on my MacBook Air. We’re at Lowe’s to the applications folder, it still has the shortcut arrow – not the full icon! And yes, I follow the instructions on the download page you referenced above.

Sorry, that’s what I get for dictating. When I download and install Firefox to the Applications folder, it still gives me only the shortcut icon.

Sorry, as a Windows guy, I don't know what to suggest as the next step.

Thank you for trying! I truly appreciate it!

Make sure you install Firefox properly and that you do not run Firefox from within the DMG (Disk Images) file.

Open the Firefox Disk Images file and drag the Firefox application to the Applications folder on your hard drive. You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the Disk Images, but instead drag it out of the DMG folder.
