Sending password for earthlink account fails when opening program. Retry always succeeds

Thunderbird 68.8.0 on Updated 64bit Win 10. TBird is 32b. Opening TBird gives the error:

Sending of password for user myusername@earthlink.net did not succeed. Mail server pop.earthlink.net responded: Pass required for azgold@earthlink.net The only option is "OK" which brings up

Login to server pop.earthlink.net with username myusername@earthlink.net failed with options "Retry, "Enter New Password" and "Cancel" Clicking retry always succeeds and mail is then retrieved. As long as TBird stays open there are no more errors. Problem comes back next time opened.

Seems to have started this only recently after an upgrade and adding the second account. Unsure if either of these relates to the problem.
