A folder of emails was deleted by mistake on Thunderbird. They are not in trash. Where else could they be and how can I recover them?

I had a folder of emails that was deleted by mistake. I expected them to be in trash so I could recover them. That was not the case nor were they anywhere that I can find. Any ideas where they might be lurking and how I can retrieve them?
