Would you at least consider Chirpy, like the Text to Voice developer suggests  ?

Did you check the Customize palette to see if it wound up there?

Text to Speech (TTS) 0.1.7 (jid1-dqs9BdQga04hBw@jetpack) (Inactive) ? or something else?

If that is Text to Speech (TTS) 0.1.7, you can file a Bug report here: https://mybrowseraddon.com/text-to-speech.html

May need some tweaking for the Firefox 60 Nightly Alpha version.

Ondoku (Voice Reading) works for me with the latest Nightly build.

For some reason I can't install the extension from the Add-ons page since it insist that my platform (Linux) isn't supported, but installing the extension locally works without any problem.

Did you check the Browser Console for messages? Did you try to reinstall the extension in case there is a problem with the permissions?

Sorry, forgot about reader mode. No speaker icon on the reader page when I select text, but I would expect that.

Did it ever work with reader mode because that uses an about page (about:reader) and WebExtensions do not work with such special pages?

The Text to Voice developer says :

"This add-on might not work with newer version of Firefox. Please use Chirpy instead. "

An extension like Ondoku or other works for me, but the reader mode Text to voice was just awesome feature that I used to use daily... the extensions required one to select text and then click on the play button and kind of add interaction if one has to read whole pages

so request ... please please can we get back the feature in reader mode?

I sure hope that you will grow to like just as much as you did Text to Voice  !

I just realized that one Privacy setting affects this availability of the text to speech in reader mode. If privacy.resistFingerprinting is set to true you will not get text to speech.

Keep in mind that the more unstable Nightly development channel gets checkins with two updates each day. This can sometimes mean issues may occur until fixed, finished, or reverted and Extensions may break partially or fully.
