Compacting resulted in deleted all emails in inbox

Client using Thunderbird (IMAP) recently (9PM tonight) compacted his inbox, and the result was the deletion of his email in his inbox. Upon completion of compact, he had 49 emails where there used to be 300+. Backed up the directory, followed instructions on repairing folders and did not delete the smf file but renamed it "old". No benefit or change. How do we get the emails back? Windows 10 Pro, lacking recent updates. Please advise ASAP.
