I read my messages in the pane below the list of messages. Previously, after deleting a message, the next message would display. A few days ago the behavior changed, now after delete I have an empty pane with no message selected. I don't remember when the last update was applied, this is Thunderbird 52.3.0 on Mac OS X Sierra 10.12.6. I have read various posts about people trying to change the default behavior (opening the next message), but I haven't seen anything about this default behavior going away? thanks, Jeff

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

Tried safe mode, but the behavior is still the same...

I have the same problem. As a workaround I can view the Message Pane and then delete the message within the Message Pane. This then causes the next message to be displayed in the Message Pane. The problem started happening suddenly today. I was using 52.3.0. I have upgraded to 53.4.0 and this had no effect on the problem. Also the 'close message window/tab on move or delete' within the Options/Display/Advanced tab became unchecked causing the message to display after deletion. I have rechecked this tab and this problem is resolved but it still won't display the next message as it did earlier today. The same problem is present in safe mode.

Just to eliminate this option I unchecked the 'Close message window/tab on move or delete' box. Now the next message displays correctly. There was presumably an issue with this processing 52.3.0 which was fixed in 52.4.0. I'm disappointed not to have had any help from the forum though.

I tried the things mentioned by Segelene, but they didn't work for me. When I open a message in its own tab, and then delete it, the title in the tab is cleared but the message window contents persist. This behavior is the same regardless of the state of the "Close message window/tab on move or delete" checkbox.

As stated above there seems to have been a problem in 52.3.0 with the next message failing to display after delete or move which is fixed in 52.4.0. Checking and unchecking 'Close message window/tab on move or delete' was a red herring that I attempted to try to fix the problem in 52.3.0 and which made matters worse in 52.4.0 once the problem was fixed so best to disregard. I hope this is clearer jbmulligan.

BTW I don't know how the message pane behaves in 52.3.0 as I only used it in 52.4.0 once I'd erroneously checked the 'Close message window/tab on move or delete' box. I view messages in their own window and the problem is fixed in 52.4,0 with the box unchecked. The message pane behaves correctly too, displaying the next message on move/delete.
