Hi, my IT Dept applied a firefox security update and now my username/password prompt does not show up now. How do I fix?
My Co. IT Dept applied a firefox security update of the weekend and now the remember security feature does not work and all of my usernames/passwords at each website are gone. If I delete and reinstall firefox will that resolve the issue? Thanks

Hi SRosen, have you asked your IT whether this was intentional? We're happy to make suggestions, but don't want you to get in trouble...
Could you check your privacy settings to see whether you are using automatic private browsing mode? You can do that on the Options page, either
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
- type or paste about:preferences in the address bar and press Enter
In the left column, click Privacy. Then on the right side, check what you have set for "Firefox will":
- Remember history - not automatic private browsing
- Never remember history - automatic private browsing
- Use custom settings for history + checkmark for "Always use private browsing mode" - automatic private browsing
I mention this because with this setting, you cannot save website logins, so that's the first thing to check.
Hi jscher2000,
Yes, I have spoke with IT Dept and the security patch or whatever they did was intentional. Privacy is currently set on Remember history. It has been like that from day one. IT suggested that I uninstall and reinstall. Any thoughts on that?
Usually Firefox doesn't disturb your existing settings if you uninstall and reinstall. However, it could help if your program files are damaged (sometimes happens). Here's a suggested approach to that problem:
Clean Reinstall
We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. You do not need to uninstall Firefox first.
It only takes a few minutes.
(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 49.0.1 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) Choose the "Windows" version (32-bit) rather than the 64-bit version for maximum plugin compatibility (and of course for 32-bit Windows systems).
(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).
(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer, rename the program folder as follows:
32-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows: Rename
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
Other combinations: Rename
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files\OldFirefox
(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
- \OldFirefox\Plugins
- \OldFirefox\browser\plugins
Any improvement?
Thanks for the suggestion, I will give it a go in a few hours, as I'm under a deadline.
I renamed as you suggested, uninstalled reinstalled and there is no change as I am still unable to save username/password at some websites, as I was able to before the weekend.
Oh, it works on some websites? Maybe there was a change related to that feature -- I don't use it myself, so I am not in a position to notice. Sorry!
I think it has something more to do with what the IT Dept did. Because the username/password prompt does not show up anymore.
