It's unbelievable that nobody else has had this situation, but I simply can't find any similar references:

1. Windows Live Mail will export its files, but they appear quite cryptic -- certainly not in the .eml format that I've seen written about. When I try to import these into Thunderbird, Thunderbird refuses, saying that there is no valid profile.

2. One suggestion I found was to install an old version of Thunderbird and then update when the process is complete. When I access the old versions, there is simply no way to install these, no installers, and no instructions on how this is done. There is a link to an older French installer which doesn't help me a bit. And of course there is no guarantee that an old version will solve this problem anyway.

Windows Live Mail 2011 is just five years old. Surely Thunderbird users are faced with this scenario all the time, but where is the support for this? I'd be delighted if someone points me in the direction.

It sounds as though this question is not about Firefox, but Thunderbird. Is that correct? If so, a moderator can move it to that forum.

Oops, I'm an idiot. Yes, of course, I meant Thunderbird, not "Firefox".

If a moderator can change the title, I'm grateful.

I'm not sure how you could even start Thunderbird without a valid profile. Did you set up any mail accounts yet?

I assume you were following this article: Switching to Thunderbird. I noticed it mentions that the ImportExport extension can import .eml files directly. Maybe this article will help: Installing an Add-on in Thunderbird.

If you have moved this elsewhere, then please provide the link so that I can participate.

The link won't change -- this site doesn't include the product name in the URL (could change in November).

I forgot to mention that I added the add-on at the very beginning and tried the import through the add-on. What happens is that I get a message about how there is no valid profile.

Thread was already moved by the time I got here, I simply changed the title from "Firefox" to "Thunderbird."
