Why can't bookmarks be stored anywhere I want as html files?

I set up my computers so that ONLY programs are on the C: drive. I store ALL files on different physical drives. This includes my website addresses which are called "bookmarks" in Firefox. It seems Firefox has no provision to allow storing bookmarks anywhere other than in the "profiles" folder. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE TO ME. I MUST be able to store all the web addresses (bookmarks) on a separate hard drive and store them as html files. Truth is, the entire "profiles" folder should be storable wherever the user chooses. But failing that, the web addresses must be so storable. Because of this gross failing in Firefox I am forced to return to Microsoft Internet Explorer, which does allow this kind of file storing.

No need to reply to this. Just take it under advisement. ANY WELL DESIGNED PROGRAM ALLOWS THE USED TO CHOOSE THE LOCATION WHERE ALL USER-VARIABLE DATA ARE STORED. I use Thunderbird, and I can do this with Thunderbird. Why not with Firefox?

Hi GBClark.

Storing the bookmarks as html would not be effective, so they are stored in places.sqlite file instead. Why do you need to store the bookmarks as html?

As for the profile, please read more here. Of course you can move it to any location, just do it and adjust the profile.ini file accordingly. Or you can download Firefox Portableapps.com version and take the whole Firefox even on your flash disc.

By the way, I doubt Internet Explorer allows you to set, where to save it's data...

You can make Firefox create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when Firefox is closed by setting browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to true on the about:config page.

This HTML backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html every time you close Firefox, but you can set the path and file name via the browser.bookmarks.file pref on the about:config page.

The browser.bookmarks.file pref doesn't exist by default and you need to create a new String pref with the name browser.bookmarks.file and set the value to the full path of the backup bookmarks.html file including the file name.

Note: an HTML backup doesn't preserve tags and annotations, so you lose those if you need to import the HTML backup.
