Playing Windows Movies in Firefox

more options

I have followed all of the steps to get the plug-in to work so I can view Windows Movies in Firefox including about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named plugins.load_appdir_plugins. double-click it and change its value to true (a restart of the browser might be necessary afterwards for the change to take effect).

I still can't see the plug-in from the side menu and I can't view the movie. Thank you for any help.

I notice you use a old version of Firefox. Updating Firefox to the last version (39.0) often solves a lot of problems as yours.

Otherwise, did you have a look at this support article: Play Windows Media files in Firefox with the Windows Media plugin ?

Could you check that the plugin is activated? You can open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Then on the right side, look for "Microsoft Windows Media Player..." and see whether it is set to "Always Activate" or "Ask to Activate". If it is disabled, it would be at the bottom of the list on a grayer background (and say "Never Activate"). In that case, choose one of the other permissions.

If Windows Media Player is set to Ask to Activate, when you visit a site that wants to use the plugin, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and usually (but not always) one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

If you see a good reason to use the media player, and the site looks trustworthy, you can go ahead and click the Lego-like icon in the address bar to allow it. You can trust the site for the time being or permanently.
