How do security certificates get put on my system?

For example, China Internet Network Information Center is a cert on my system and I've never visited that site. How did it get placed here?

hello, these are the root certificates built-into and trusted by a browser - for an overview of that architecture please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_authority there are strict policies for certificate authorities to come & stay on the list of included certificates: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/governance/policies/security-group/certs/policy/
