I lost all my bookmarks and history after updating my firefox browser. I have tried locating the old profile, but there doesn't appear to be one. I have also tried restoring an old session, but that doesn't work either.

Is there really no trace of six years worth of bookmarks anywhere?

What's odd is the only thing left in my history is from the very rare occasion I ever used google chrome... how does it save my google chrome history and not the history from the browser I use all the time?

I have the exact same problem, except it happened after updating recently to 36.0. I've also lost my search engines. What's going on?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

You can check if you have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

My case was actually solved by restarting the computer entirely. My friend thinks it was a file access problem. Don't know about OP's case.
