I can't add any sites to the 'top sites' tab. I have tried clicking on the blue + to add the site, ive tried right clicking on the website and adding it that way but still nothing happens, all i get is blank tiles. I've enabled 'remember history' in options but this doesn't help either. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, see if this helps - The thumbnails on the New Tab page are missing - how to get them back.

If that doesn't help, try this: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to browser.newtab.url and make sure 'Value' is set to about:newtab (right click > Modify, to change it if necessary, taking care not to alter anything else). You may then need to restart Firefox. More - Configuration Editor for Firefox.

if still not working, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Is only the thumbnail not showing or can't you drag a link to a tile as well?

Is the disk cache enabled and working if you check that on the about:cache page?

You can open "about" pages via the location/address bar.

  • "about" is a protocol to access special built-in pages

You can check on the about:config page that you do not have a browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled pref that is set to true.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I can only see blank thumbnails on the top site tab, and when i try to drag a link to a tile, it has a black circle with line through it, and it doesn't work.

I have checked the about:config page and i don't have browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled at all, i do have something similar browser.pagethumbnails.storage_version.

Thanks for your help though.

Hi,

Thanks for your response, i believe this 'fix' is for the new tab page, which shows your most recent visited websites?? Thanks for this information, as it is useful for the future, but it is not the issue that i am having. The issue i am having is with Foxtab, the 'Top sites' add-on, which i can't check in safe mode as it get's disabled along with all other add-on's.

Regards

Gary
