how do I leave focus in the thread pane after selecting a message

I want to preview my messages quickly using the up and down arrows while focus stays in the thread pane. But any time a message is selected whether by mouse click or arrow key, focus jumps to the message pane and the arrow keys scroll the message. There's a setting, right, to keep focus in the thread pane until I click in the message pane? Running version 31.6.0. Thanks.
