Every time I open a new tab, instead of going to where it normally does with the pinned tabs it goes to chrome://quick_start/content/index.html

This problem first started after I used a program called Junkware Removal Tool to get rid of some malware, but I'm not quite sure what the connection is.

his is a problem with an extension.
You didn't include a list of your installed extension, so you will have to check yourself which one.
The "quick_start" in the chrome URL should give you a clue about which extension is causing it.
Firefox uses the chrome protocol to access built-in pages and access files from extensions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Thank you very much. I just checked my list of extensions and found that my new tab extension was disabled. I Re enabled it and everything is fine now.

You actually shouldn't need an additional extension to solve this problem, but you might need to update a hidden setting.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter your preferred page:

  • Page thumbnails (default) => about:newtab
  • Blank tab => about:blank
  • Built-in Firefox home page => about:home
  • Any other page => full URL to the page

Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?

More generally, because extensions can see and touch everything you do in Firefox, I suggest reviewing and disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or remove).

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
