Is there a way to disable the Firefox media player so that when I open a direct link to an audio file it downloads instead of plays? A workaround I found was to go to about:config and set media.wmf.enabled to false. While this does what I want, it also seems to completely disable all media playback, including genuine media systems such as HTML5 media related tags etc. Thanks.

In Preferences->Applications, check out the different mime types and what actions are defined for them.

All audio files (*.flac, *.mp3, *.ogg etc) are set to "save file", yet they still play in Firefox. Strangely enough, *.wav files don't seem to be affected.
